Read about Dakota's journey to finding the place where he was supposed to be.
In college, I had no clue what I wanted to do. I was stuck in a 7 AM algebra class, listening to a professor with the most monotone voice imaginable. After scoring a solid 12 on a math test, I had a life-altering realization: I gotta get out of here.
One day, I saw a job posting for a health insurance agent. The interview made it sound like an easy gig. Being 18 and wildly optimistic, I said, I’m in! What I didn’t realize was that it was a full-commission job, and I had just signed up for a crash course in real-life hustle.
My first month? Brutal.
I worked 12-hour days and made a whopping $300, helping just one person. But through the struggle, I learned a valuable lesson: hard work matters, but working smart matters even more. I started refining my approach, figuring out how to market and, more importantly, how to sell products that people actually needed. Month after month, my income nearly doubled until I was making solid money for an 18-year-old.After three years in the industry, I got ambitious (and maybe a little overconfident). I tried running a marketing agency and selling insurance. Big mistake. Another lesson learned: Do one thing really well before trying to do everything.
I ended up leaving insurance for about three years, bouncing around jobs—marketing SaaS, selling cell phone parts, credit repair, you name it. But at 21, I had another realization: The only thing I actually liked was insurance. So, I jumped back in, but this time, I took it seriously. It took me a couple of years to hone my skills, but eventually, I became a top producer. We built marketing systems that started bringing in leads from all over the country. That’s when it clicked: We need every product in every state so we can truly help families.
On the business side, things got tricky. The organization I was with started taking a huge cut of the revenue after the first year, and let’s just say… some unethical things were happening. So, my business partner, Lore Soto, and I merged our brands and created The Benefits Boss. Our mission? Offer every insurance product in every state to help families the right way. And for agents? Give them the opportunity of a lifetime—a place where they could thrive without high-pressure tactics and actually love what they do.After studying over 15 agencies, we built (and are still building) the best place for agents to succeed. In just three years, we’ve racked up over 1,000 five-star reviews and secured some incredible deals for both clients and agents.
Now, I’m living in Dallas, TX, with my wife and four rowdy dogs. I’m a lover of Jesus, comedy, and always dreaming about what’s next.
